History: Mia Fey was born in Kurain Village as the eldest daughter of Misty Fey and an unnamed father. She was followed by a younger sister, Maya, when she was ten. Their childhood was abruptly disrupted when Mia was twelve, when her mother was called in by the police to channel the victim of a murder that they were unable to solve. The consultation was highly confidential, though somehow the news reached the ears of the press, and the blame was pinned on the wrong man. Misty Fey and her methods were publicly ridiculed and the police reduced to national laughing stocks. Unable to cope with the shame she had brought upon the family and her lifestyle, Misty Fey abandoned Kurain Village and her daughters, leaving them to be raised by her sister. Some time in her teens, Mia decided not to follow in the footsteps of her redoubtable mother and gave up her claim to the title of Master, leaving it instead to her younger sister. She did this as she had no wish to fall out with her beloved sister the way that her mother had become estranged from her elder sister, Morgan Fey, as Misty's powers as a spirit medium surpassed her sister's to such an extent that she was made Master in her stead. It was a clash which would come back to haunt the family years later.
Out on her own, Mia enrolled in college to study law, meeting and befriending fellow student Lana Skye, who would go on to become Chief Prosecutor. Mia graduated and took her first position in the office of Marvin Grossberg, a renowned defense attorney in Los Angeles. It was there that she studied under the tutelage of not only Grossberg but a hot shot, arrogant defense attorney named Diego Armando, who would go on to shape Mia's life in more ways than professionally. Even at the start of her career Mia was one to watch; she chose as her first case to defend a convicted murderer, Terry Fawles, who was accused with committing his second murderer after he escaped from prison. The victim, Valerie Hawthorne, had testified at his first trial and been instrumental in getting him convicted in the kidnap and murder of her younger sister, Dahlia. Mia was able to prove through the course of the trial that he was not only innocent of those charges, but also those that he was convicted for in the first place when she was able to reveal Dahlia Hawthorne was alive and well and testifying as a witness against Fawles in that very courtroom... and was also guilty of the very murder that the hapless Fawles was on trial for. Unfortunately for everyone involved, Dahlia Hawthorne was a manipulative, evil individual who had everyone wrapped around her little finger, and managed to coerce poor Terry Fawles to commit suicide rather than condemn her for her crimes. The ordeal ended in a mistrial, Dahlia went free, and Mia suffered a nervous breakdown.
Time passed, and Mia gradually recovered thanks to her desire to see Dahlia Hawthorne rightfully imprisoned and also as a result of the support of her superior, Diego Armando. He had been her co-counsel that fateful day, and while everything was going to hell he taught her the philosophy that would colour her entire legal career:
"Don't you get it? You can't cry yet. The only time a lawyer can cry is when it's all over."
Together, the two worked tirelessly to bring Dahlia Hawthorne to justice, and over time their relationship became a romantic one and the two fell in love. Six months after Mia's disastrous first trial, tragedy struck yet again. On the morning of August 27th, Diego went to meet with Dahlia Hawthorne and was subsequently poisoned. He lapsed into a deep and lasting coma, while Dahlia escaped yet again as no evidence was found on her person to implicate her. Mia threw herself into pursuing her, only to have fate throw her a bone eight months later. Marvin Grossberg had taken on a case defending a university student accused of murder, and upon Mia's discovery that a key witness for the prosecution happened to be Dahlia Hawthorne, she begged to take on the case the night before the trial and stood up in court the next day for the first time since Terry Fawles' death. That, however, was not the last that was seen of Mia Fey. Thanks to her family’s bloodline, Mia was still on hand whenever she was needed as her sister Maya, and then later her cousin Pearl, were both able to channel her whenever her help was needed. Mia herself was able to help Phoenix get her murderer convicted, as well as go on to solve the case that was at the heart of her mother’s disappearance: the DL-6 incident. While death is usually enough to put a permanent end to anyone’s life and career, Mia Fey continues to help in the legal field in the afterlife and keep a watchful eye on her family and friends.

When Mia believes in someone, she believes in them 100% and will not stop fighting for them, even if they’ve given up on themselves. Her pupil Phoenix comments that "Mia would always turn things around and change her perspective!" which is a philosophy he subsequently follows with great success. Her onetime mentor and former boss, Marvin Grossberg, comments that Mia had the determination and bluffing ability that many veteran lawyers of her era were lacking. Whenever she appears to help Phoenix in court, she's firm and resolute in her cause, as well as providing a calm and grounding influence on Phoenix when he's at his most shaken and in need of guidance.

The only negative thing that can be said, perhaps, is her occasionally tendency to mess up a client’s name. Mia is extremely good at reading people, both on the stand and off. In many of Phoenix's investigations, she has shown up to help get to the bottom of the case and succeeded in drawing out crucial testimony from witnesses where Maya and Phoenix have both failed by using her own innate charm and charisma, and also by calling upon her... natural attributes. A wide range of people, from seven year old fanboys to eccentric geriatric pigeon feeders, are charmed by her and readily offer up information to her. (Even indirectly, she is able to help out with her good looks, as producing a photo of her to ‘Doctor Hotti’ in the second game elicits a positive enough reaction to earn his cooperation in the investigation.)
Mia's mind is as sharp as a tack and her wits formidable; Phoenix quails at the prospect of having to do battle against them in case 2 of the second game as he quests to prove Maya's innocence. Her skills are so redoubtable that even the unflappable Edgeworth is said to have been impressed by her presence in court- a fact that is further reinforced when he is all but defeated by her in the third game before the trial comes to a tragic end with Terry Fawles’ suicide. (It should also be noted that this admiration for her could have had something to do with her similarity to his late father, Gregory Edgeworth, a much admired defense attorney to whom Mia is favourably compared by Marvin Grossberg as being his equal.) Mia does not suffer fools gladly; she has a sharp tongue in her head and is not afraid to put it to use in putting out a razor sharp put down if she feels the recipient has earned one. She also appears to have had a temper of sorts in her youth, as she physically strikes Grossberg when Dahlia Hawthorne’s behaviour on the stand angers her enough. Even before her courtroom debut, Mia is so determined to perform well that she studies procedural videos the night before so that she can get it down right before she starts. Her vigour, performance and reputation were respected enough that she was considered to be one of the courtroom greats of her era. She demonstrates a quickness of thinking by coming up with plans of action on the spur of the moment (as is shown in the final case of the third game, when she devises a plan for Maya to protect herself from Dahlia Hawthorne) and shows remarkable forward thinking and awareness of different points of view, as is shown whenever she points out weak points of Phoenix’s defense that the prosecution would be able to turn to their advantage.

She is so determined to get to the bottom of the mystery of her mother’s disappearance that she quite literally devotes her life to it; for fifteen years she is so obsessed with finding out what happened that she changes her future by leaving Kurain to become a lawyer. As for her loyalty, it speaks volumes that even her own death is not enough to prevent her from being on hand to help her sister and former student in their somewhat numerable hours of need. Not only does she lend her mind to the situation, she’s able to provide a calming influence on her loved ones in order to get them to come up with a solution themselves; Mia is a wonderful teacher in that she never explicitly tells Phoenix what he has to do. She will prompt and instruct, but the conclusions must always be Phoenix’s, and she knows that tough love is the only thing that will bring out his true potential. It is a strategy that always pays off in the end.

Seeing the truth: Mia has in her possession a spiritual artifact called a Magatama, an object said to enable one to look into another’s heart. When imbued with spiritual power, this ornament enables a spirit medium to perceive locks on a person's soul called Psyche-Locks. In the context of the Ace Attorney, these locks are usually created when someone is withholding information and keeping important secrets from the person holding the Magatama. In order to break the locks, certain clues have to be correctly solved with relevant evidence. The locks are completely invisible to anyone other than the bearer of the Magatama, even the person hiding the secret.
